Experts have discovered a new blood test that can detect preeclampsia early in pregnancy, even before symptoms appear. Listen to the explanation below, Mom.
Experts can find predictive patterns with a blood test before symptoms appear during pregnancy

Preeclampsia is still a health problem that threatens the lives of pregnant women and their fetuses.Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and excess protein in the mother's urine.
In addition to checking blood pressure and protein levels in urine, blood tests can now detect the risk of preeclampsia.Recently, medical company LabCorp developed a blood test that can assess the risk of preeclampsia early in pregnancy or before symptoms appear.
"This test is designed to help identify people who are at high risk of developing preeclampsia before 34 weeks' gestation," said April Bleich, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Burnett School of Medicine at Texas Christian University.
"This test can be done at the beginning of pregnancy, from 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy," he continued, quoted on the Parents page.
Until it is reported in May 2024, this test is completely new and is not recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).However, it is believed that this test can play a role in the prevention and treatment of preeclampsia, mothers.
"We don't have enough information or data to support a recommendation that all pregnant women should have this test," Bleich said.
"This is really promising and with more research we may be able to translate it into a clinical practice."
More Tests for Preeclampsia
This new blood test tests for signs of preeclampsia. The test is designed to be used early in pregnancy, between the 11th and 14th weeks. The test results can inform the patient about the risk of preeclampsia at 34 weeks of pregnancy.
"This screening test works by assessing the risk of preeclampsia by assessing four biomarkers associated with the risk of the condition before 34 weeks of pregnancy," says Anushka Chellaiah, MD, board-certified MFM specialist and medical director of Pediatrics Medical Group of Texas.
Note that biomaxes are molecules in the blood or body tissue that may be an indicator of disease. This test is divided into two blood biomoirs with factor (knife hormone) and pregnancy plasma proteins - α (papp-α).
"Low levels of PlGF and PAPP-A can indicate poor development and function of the placenta, as well as high blood pressure and uterine pulsatility index indicating hypertension and reduced blood flow in the uterine arteries," Chelliah said.
Conditions for pregnant women who are recommended to have blood tests
Please note that this blood test has not changed clinical guidelines for the treatment and diagnosis of preeclampsia as recommended by ACOG or the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM).At that time, the mother will make the decision on a case-by-case basis as to who will undergo the test.
However, this test can be performed by almost every pregnant woman to assess the risk of preeclampsia early in pregnancy. This test is also very helpful for pregnant women with certain medical conditions.
"This test may be more appropriate for certain patients based on their medical or obstetric history, and patients should discuss with their obstetrician or nurse whether this test is a good option for them," Chelya said.
Although this test can be helpful for some pregnant women, not all of them need to undergo this test. The reason is that this test is a screening test, not a test used to diagnose preeclampsia.
“I also cautioned against using this test in general because this study was only looked at at Hackensack University,” Abdulla al-Khan, MD.
"A low test result does not necessarily mean that the patient has pre-eclampsia and should deliver immediately. This test is not intended to diagnose and/or diagnose pre-eclampsia. It only tells you that the patient has the potential to develop it."
Meanwhile, according to Chelia, the test is useful for pregnant women whose babies are at high risk of preeclampsia. This test can give more information about the risk of complications in pregnancy
"This test can make the risk targeted during the close monitoring from the health representatives, to evaluate the pressure of the health, and to know the increase of the symptoms and the treatment when the risk of the payment increases," said Chelliya said.
It is a blood test result that requires early diagnosis before symptoms appear in early pregnancy. We hope this information is useful.
